A visit from Dole Foods and Agri Aware written by Brooke
25/3/26
Today we had some special visitors to our school for healthy eating week. Today Dole Foods and Agri Aware came to our school to make smoothies and plant fruit and vegetables. Our class is participating in a programme called “Incredible Edibles”. It is an organization between Agri Aware and Dole Foods. Dole Foods is a fruit wholesaler. When they came in they did an introductory talk, about what we would be doing and who they were.
When they finished their talk they took us to the yard and we stood outside their smoothie truck. He then called up a volunteer to get the bananas ready. When the volunteer got into the food truck the man asked her to peel the bananas. She then peeled the bananas and then cut them in half. Then he asked for another volunteer. The second volunteer then got into the food truck. He asked the volunteer to put two handfuls of strawberries into the blender where the bananas and orange juice were. The man started to blend the mixture. When it was done blending we all said we wanted more strawberries. He mixed the juice, bananas and strawberries together. He then told us to get into a single file line to get our smoothies. When I got my smoothie I thought it was really delicious, I also got a picture with my friends while holding a sign. We then went back up to our classroom to plant some seeds.
When we got back up to class we were talking with a girl from Agri Aware about what plants need. Plants need: water, sun, space and soil. We got vegetable and fruit seeds to grow. We were growing radishes, beetroot, turnips, onions, pole beans, lettuce, potatoes and strawberries. My friend and I were going to grow some radishes. We got seven dissolving / biodegradable pots. We grouped our seeds into groups of four, five or six seeds in each pot, depending on what we were growing. The pots we got were dissolvable pots and can go directly into soil. We started to plant the seeds by first putting in soil but not to the very top. Secondly we sprayed two pumps of water into the soil. Thirdly, we put a three centimeter hole into the soil by using our fingers. Fourth we lightly sprinkled more soil on top of the seeds. Every three to four days we will tend to them and water them. We labelled our pots with our names, the plant names and the date. Then the woman left. That was our interesting day!
This was a very enjoyable, valuable and educational experience that we were delighted and grateful to be part of!
