Weeks 1 & 2 - Mon 16th to Fri 27th March
Hello Parents,
Ms. Butterly & Ms.Rogers have set this page up to give tips and guidance on some simple activities that you can do with your children at home while the schools remain closed. We will add to this page along the way. Every little task, game, activity can help continue your child's learning......and can also break up these long days as we all try to stay home and stay safe. Take care everyone!!
Letter & Pack Sent Home:
Continue to revise the tricky words and jolly phonics sounds. You can find the song for each sound on YouTube. Keep working on the blending words in the coloured copies - 5 or 10 a day (whatever suits your child). You can also use these words as guide of words to call out to your child and ask them to write them down (encouraging them to use their sounds when stuck, "Sound it out!").
Make simple games by writing sounds or words on cards and turning them upside down, take turns to turn cards over, the child keeps the card if they know the sound/word, if they don't know it, help them and put it back in the game to be picked up later. See who gets the most cards at the end?!
Encourage your child to write a few sentences in their free writing copies, daily news is always a good start.
Please continue to work your way through the letter formation & maths worksheets sent home at a pace that suits your child.
Do explore the list of useful website & educational programmes sent home also, there are lots of great resources and games out there!!
Reading
Oxford Reading Tree books are available online for free. Log onto www.oxfordowl.co.uk and look for Oxford Reading Tree ebooks. There is a drop down list of books and you can choose a level that suits your child.
Please continue with your child's library pack. Read to them at bedtime, talk about the pictures, the story. Share reading, where they try to read and you help them when they get stuck.
Maths
Encourage your children to do simple counting activities at home e.g. How many apples are left in the fruit bowl?
Make a set of number cards 1-10 and ask the children to identify the numbers. Get your child to put the number cards in the right order. Pick a card, ask your child what number comes before/after that number. Call out numbers 1-10 and ask your child to write it down.
Play Missing Number game - number cards are in order, child closes their eyes, remove one card, child opens eyes, "What number is missing?".
Physical Activity & Mental Health
It is important to keep our children active during these unusual times. We had started doing the 10@10 on the RTE Junior webpage in class everyday and the kids loved it. Well worth a look at.
Do not try to do much at the one time. Break up the schoolwork into little tasks. Mix written work with reading, drawing, everyday chats about the weather, the season of Spring........active breaks.....some games on the tablet but not too much screen time. Play is also very important........play with their toys, play imaginatively - pretend school/shop/restaurant....even pretend school!!!
