Coding workshops with The Code Lab
The girls in 4th, 5th and 6th classes had great fun earlier this month learning about coding and robotics with Joan McCann from The Code Lab. Joan introduced the girls to computer coding using Scratch. Some of the girls created their own Game of Tip on the computer, and others created Art on the screen using code. They really enjoyed being creative with Scratch.
The girls then learned about the BBC Micro:bit, a micro-computer, the size of a credit card, that can be coded to be lots of cool things. Within a few minutes, the girls had turned the Micro:bit into a Flashing Heart Badge, which they could wear around as "Wearable Technology", and even a Name tag displaying their name in lights. These were a huge hit with the girls!
To finish off, Joan showed the girls how the same Micro:bit can be used to control a mini-robot, and there was great excitement when each of the girls got to driving the robots around using coded remote controls. Joan explained all the features on the robot and how they can all be controlled using computer code. There was even a demonstration showing how sensors can be used on the robot to make sure it doesn't bang into things!
The girls really enjoyed this introduction to Computer coding and robotics, and we hope this will encourage them to try out new technologies in the future, and embrace the world of computer coding. #GirlsInTech
