Monday 15th-19th June

Hi Parents and Girls,

Only two weeks to go with this academic year! Well done to you all on an outstanding effort with continued home learning! I am so proud of you all for your efforts and your fabulous at home teachers. Give your parents or whomever is helping you out a massive cheer and be extra kind to them this week! As we are close to the end, this week and next we will revise some work previously covered and try to keep it 'fun' . Remember the work suggested below is a guide, please do what you can and try your best. Keep active and enjoy Wellness Wednesday.
Parents; you should have received an email from Mrs.Mc Nally regarding book collection this week on Wednesday 17th. The time slot for 4th Class is 12.30pm-1pm (or earlier if you have younger children's work to collect). School Reports will be included with your child's copies. If you have any books belonging to the school that need to be returned please bring them with you at this time. The school will follow HSE guidelines to keep everyone safe and we ask that only one Adult per family approach to collect.
Have a lovely week, any questions at all or photos please email me Mctigueaoife@gmail.com.

Take Care,

A. McMahon

Maths- Pattern

This week in Maths we will cover Pattern. We will examine odd and even numbers and explore number patterns and sequences. Take your time with your calculations, use the information given to figure out 'the rule'- are the numbers getting larger or smaller? by how much?
Can you find patterns in your environment? Take a look at nature around you and you may be surprised to see pattern all around! Can you make your own patterns? Remember "Banana Banana Meatball".?..go on, have a boogie!
Mental Maths for the Week is in the file below. Please email me with any questions.

Writing:
This week lets have a quick look at letter writing. I would like for you to pick someone you haven't seen in a while a friend/ family member and write them a little letter to check in and say hi. Spread a little kindness through good old fashioned post! You could also write a letter to your future self, put it away somewhere safe and open it next year and see how much has changed or if you still enjoy doing the same things. I love reading back on old diary entries I have written, they always make me laugh! Picture below is a guide of what you need to include what you are writing a letter and in the file below there is paper lined out to help you.

S.E.S.E- Geography

Can you remember all the counties of Ireland? I know most of you could call out and label all the counties in our province of Leinster with ease and we worked very hard at trying to learn the rest. Test your knowledge !take a look at the poem below which lists all the counties in the correct province and try your best to label as many as you can. In the file below (the color by numbers activity) I have included an answer sheet but try your very best to fill in what you know without peeking!

You can choose any patterns/shapes you like, be creative! use colour too if you wish for added wow factor! Don't forget to send me your finished pictures!

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10 or hit the button https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

This week we will move onto Chance. This topic involves lots of new words and language such as possible, unlikely, definitely, impossible, probable. It might be useful to talk through some of these words with an adult or look them up in the dictionary if you are not sure about the meaning.  Maybe try and put all the new words into sentences, have a little fun with them! "it is unlikely Ms.McMahon will get all her laundry done by 2pm but it is not impossible" (the pile is staring at me and growing by the second!). Watch the weather forecast and you may notice similar language being used " there is a chance of rain".  Have a look at the video clip below (bonus point if you recognize the background music!) and listen to all the language of Chance that is used.
Also this week if you can log into your cjfallon account (free access) there is a good interactive chance task( tutorial 90) you could try. Remember you do not need to complete every question below , choose some from each page to try and you can talk through some of the answers instead of writing everything down. I have included some  Mental Maths for the week in a file below. Please email me with any questions about any of the work.

Writing:
This week I would like for you to write about your highlights from this year at school. What are some of your best/favourite/funniest moments from the year? Try and come up with as many as you can. I really enjoyed watching your performance at the Christmas assembly and being wowed by your fantastic presentations and Art work. We also had some great 'penny drop' moments in Maths and fun with tables games. What sticks out for you? Can you make a list then perhaps put it together in a poem? I would really love if you could send them onto me and I can post them here over the next few weeks so we can all read and enjoy. I am missing you all and know you are missing each other but I would like to focus on all the positives from the year and celebrate your progress.

Science Experiment- Bouncy Egg!

Here is another fun and easy experiment to try at home. For this you will need:
  • an Egg
  • Vinegar
  • Jar
We gave this a go at my house last week for some fun! We used a jam jar and closed the lid back on to avoid the smell of vinegar through the house. You simply cover the egg in vinegar and leave it for 24-48hrs. When you try to bounce the Egg I'd strongly  recommend going outside or to a space that is easy clean in case the egg breaks! We got a few bounces out of ours before my Mr.four year old gave it a mighty bounce from a height then....spolsh! It was fun to watch the shell dissolve over the few days and see how strong the membrane of the egg actually is. Don't forget to wash your hands thoroughly after handling the egg. Raw egg can make you sick! Take some pics and let me know how it goes...

Art and science- paper towel magic!

This was another little creative art/science experiment we had hours of fun with. For this you will need:
  • A permanent marker (like a sharpie)
  • any washable markers
  • kitchen roll
  • dish with a little water (can be a plate)
Draw a design on the outer layer of kitchen roll using a permanent marker (so the ink does not run). On the layer underneath , colour in your design or write a secret/ uplifting message for someone using washable ink (any marker that is not permanent!).  Perhaps with permission you could take a little video of it and send it to someone special like a grandparent or a friend you are missing. Fold over then dip into water and watch the "magic" . If you have little brothers or sisters be sure to include them in this as they will enjoy the 'reveal' for sure!
If you don't have a permanent marker at home you can still have some fun. We made rainbows below using just washable marker. Just fold two paper towels together longways and colour the tips on both ends in rainbow colours. Dip both ends into a glass and watch the colour absorb until they meet to make a rainbow! Please ask permission before you start, my children loved this so much we ran out of Kitchen roll!

Have you heard that author J.K Rowling (Harry Potter) is publishing her new book online for free chapter by chapter? Its called the Ickabog- www.jkrowling.com/j-k-rowling-introduces-the-ickabog/  Go to the website and have a read all about it. She also has a very exciting illustrations competition where your drawings/ illustrations could be published in the finished book...how cool! I knew all that begging me for Artful Artist as a reading job would pay off fourth class, get those entries in!

S.E.S.E- Fun Science!

Last week we had lots of fun at my house trying our hand at making our own lava lamps. It is a very simple and fun experiment you could try too. There are a few things you will need so maybe check with an adult if you could add any item you may not have to your shopping list for the week.
  • a container (plastic bottle/ jar )
  • Oil (cooking oil or baby oil)
  • food colouring
  • Alka Seltzer Tablets/ bicarbonate of Soda. ( any effervescent tablet)
You can also choose to add glitter too if you have some for extra wow! Below is a pic of how ours turned out and a video of how to make one. We loved them and if you shine a strong torch underneath it makes the bubbles look even cooler! Please keep in mind that oil is messy, I've spent the last few days removing my children's homemade lava lamps from their bedrooms as I'm terrified they will spill/leak . If you have an outdoor space I'd definitely recommend you set up your science lab there! Could you write out the procedure for your experiment and your scientific findings? why do the oil and water not mix? how do the tablets work to make it fizz? Decorate your bottles and send me photos letting me know how you got on!

Something Fun and Simple this week...Rock Painting. Again we tried this at our house and it was lots of fun, we used paint and markers, paint brushes, cotton buds for dot painting and tissue for blending. Have a look at some of the ideas below for inspiration. Our rocks added lots of color to our flower beds and it was relaxing to sit outside in the sunshine and be creative.

Writing- Reports
Here are some more samples of Reports on Animals. For writing this week I would like you to pick an animal to do a report on. The last time in class we wrote reports we focused on birds as we had just had a visit from some owls and large birds...do you remember? Maybe pick a different type of animal this time, something exotic or your favourite large animal, pick one that interests you and wow me with some fun facts and diagrams!
Picture
Here is a reminder/model of how to write a report. Research first, then make a plan using the headings in the box below( a sample one on penguins) Then put it all together as one piece using paragraphs to separate the main ideas. At the botton of this sheet you will see a useful checklist you can use to make sure you have included everything!
Picture
Here is another sample sheet, this one is for reports on Polar Bears but remember it is up to you what animal you pick! The headings and plan will be the same but you choose the animals and facts to include. If you are unable to research using a book or the internet you can use some of the fact sheets I have given you here.

Writing( Art )

As I mentioned above, many of you sent me wonderful photos of your writing. I especially loved a wonderful poem Molly sent me all about Spring and thought it would be nice for us all to give it go. I’ve attached a promt sheet with the five senses to guide us. If you are lucky enough to have an outdoor space, then out you pop for this! If not sitting by an open window somewhere quiet would work too. Go through each of the five senses and list all the things you can see/hear/smell etc. Take your time with this, enjoy the sunshine ☀️ and nature. Be still and silent, take some deep breaths and enjoy a few moments rest. Once you have filled up each list as much you can try to put some descriptive sentences together as a poem. Reread your work, edit all errors and don’t forget to add some more interesting adjectives for added wow factor. Finally publish it however you like ( best handwriting/ coloured pen/ typed) and decorate it. You know I love a good frame 🖼 around published work! Send a photo of finished piece to my email and I will share them all on here next week.
Picture

Nature Art

Following on from the poem above, if you have a garden or are able to get out for a little walk. Look at all the nature around you. My kids and I have been having lots of fun gathering up leaves, stones n twigs and creating pictures and patterns on paper or on the ground. Ours don’t always look quite so detailed or beautiful as the ones below! But images below are inspiration to guide you! If you are collecting natural items from around your house, please remember to wash your hands to keep safe! Again please send me pictures of your creations and I’ll post them here next week.
Try to self Edit all of your work, always read over what you have written and check the basics like capital letters and full stops. Don’t forget capital I when you are talking about yourself! Below are some simple grammar exercises you can do in your copy throughout the week.

SESE

We will continue our five senses theme with our Science this week. We have previously researched fingerprints and the sense- Touch. This week let's zoom in on the human eye! Watch the Youtube clip below with some facts on the human eye. I've attached a simple experiment you can try with someone at home. You could attempt a diagram and some facts on the eye in your copy. There are lots of educational videos on youtube to continue your research if you would like to do a little project.  Reread last weeks History chapter on the Normas as we will revisit that topic before the Summer Holidays.
