Zoo Animals
Have you ever been to the zoo? What kind of animals do you see there? What is your favourite zoo animal? Would you be able to have these animals as pets? Why/Why not?
The word “zoo” is short for “zoological park.” Zoos contain wide varieties of animals from all over the world.
Zoos are meant to entertain and educate the public about animals from the wild but  also have a strong emphasis on scientific research and species conservation (helping to save endangered species).
We are very lucky in Ireland to have a wonderful zoo in Dublin and a wildlife park in Fota, Co.Cork.
Dublin Zoo and Fota Wildlife park both have excellent websites where you can learn more about zoo animals.

Take a virtual tour of Dublin zoo by clicking on the following link https://www.dublinzoo.ie/virtual-tours-2/
Learn about the animals in Fota wildlife park by clicking on the link https://www.fotawildlife.ie/animals-plants

Let's go to Sydney, Australia now for a virtual tour of of Taronga Zoo
I really enjoyed our tour of Taronga Zoo. I hope you did too!
Why not pick your favourite Zoo animal and write 5 facts you have learned about it and draw a picture of it. You might even like to do a mini project on an animal you are really interested in.
You can learn even more about animals by visiting https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/videos/amazing-animals/
Complete the Wider environments worksheet in the SESE file.
Complete the Zoo co-ordinates worksheet in the SESE file

Music

Continuing with our Zoo Animals theme we are going to listen to some pieces of music featuring animals. Our first song is called 'Pink elephants on parade' from the film Dumbo.
I want you to think about all the different instruments you hear during the piece. Do we hear voices the whole way through the piece? Does the mood of the music change or is it the same the whole way through? Do you like the music? Why/Why not?
The second piece is called Carnival of the Animals, Finale by Camille Saint-Saens. The video accompanying the music is Flamingos from Fantasia 2000. I hope you enjoy it. It feels like a musical roller coaster to me with lots of highs and lows. Did  the tempo of the music change during the piece? What instruments of the Orchestra can you hear?
For our last piece we are going to revisit one of my favourite movies 'The Lion King'.  This piece is called 'The Circle of Life'
Art
Mindfulness Wild animals colouring sheets (see Art file)
Check out the video of an elephant from an elephant conservation camp in Thailand painting in the following link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He7Ge7Sogrk I was amazed by this!

Weight
This week we will be learning about the topic Weight. . We will compare the weight of different objects. We will learn about kilogrammes, half kilogrammes and quarter kilogrammes.
Baking is a great way to learn about weight. If an adult is baking at home they might let you help weigh the ingredients

Activity A:
Find two empty bags the same size. Fill one bag with some  teddies and the other bag with tins of beans/peas or any other tins from your kitchen press. Do the two bags feel the same weight? Which one felt lighter?
Try the activity again this time with teddies in one bag and books in the other. Did they feel the same weight? Which felt lighter? If you wanted you could now compare the tins to the books. Which felt heavier/lighter?
As you can see not everything the same size  weighs the same!
Activity B:
If you wanted to you could make a homemade balance to compare the weight of different small objects in your home. The following link gives you a step by step guide https://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Balance-Scale-for-Kids  or you could watch the video below

Activity C
Look in your kitchen presses and see if you can find items that weigh 1 kg=1000 g, 1/2 kg= 500g or 1/4 kg=250g

Activity D
If you have a kitchen scales at home perhaps you could weigh a variety of objects to see if they weigh more or less than 1kg

Worksheets
-Weight- Balancing
-Weight- Vocabulary Wordsearch
-Mass- Measurement- Heavier or Lighter
-Weight- kilogramme (note: if you do not have a kitchen scales find something in your kitchen press that weighs 1kg and compare the weight of the objects to it)

Subtraction
It is important to practise our operations so I have included a subtraction worksheet in the Maths file.

SESE
We are lucky in Ireland to live on an island. This means we are surrounded by many beautiful beaches. County Louth is a coastal county and we have many beaches on our doorsteps including Blackrock , Gyles Quay ,Templetown and Clogherhead beaches to name but a few.
What kind of things can you see at the seaside? What kind of creatures would you find? What kind of activities can you do?
Lots of people enjoy going on trips and holidays to the seaside. In the SESE file there is a worksheet  called Postcards from the Past. Read the postcards and then answer the questions.
Read about rock pool creatures (see SESE file)and write out five facts that  you have learned.
Seaside habitat worksheet (see file)
Dingle is one of Ireland's well know coastal towns. It has rugged scenery, trails and sandy beaches. It is famous for Fungie the dolphin. Lots of People visit Dingle just to get a glimpse of Fungie. You can read about Fungie in this link https://dingle-peninsula.ie/28-attractions-on-the-dingle-peninsula/family-friendly-activities-on-the-dingle-peninsula/122-fungi-the-dingle-dolphin.html
You can watch a video of Fungie in action in the video below.
In Ireland some of our seaside towns are home to aquariums. Sea life Aquarium in Bray is a very good example. Let's go on a short virtual school tour.

Music
Continuing on with our Seaside theme we are going to listen to some songs about life at the beach. The first song is one lots of you probably already know. It is called 'How far I'll go' and is from the movie Moana. The second song is called 'Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride' and it is taken from the movie Lilo and Stitch. The last song is a little older it is called 'Surfin' USA' by The Beach Boys. I hope you enjoy listening to the songs. We have all been singing them in my house over the weekend. My girls particularly love the song from Moana.
When you are listening to the songs I would like you to think about
-The mood of the music is it happy, sad, uplifting
-The instruments can you hear
-Is the music loud or soft?
-What does the music make you want to do? (sing, dance etc.)
PE and SPHE
As we have been learning so much about the seaside and the fact that we live on an island I think it is important that we also cover a little water safety. It is important to keep yourself safe around water especially at the beach.
The PAWS programme is a water safety programme aimed at children. Please read all about keeping safe around water in the Paws Programme link https://online.flowpaper.com/7efd0784/PAWS2ENGLISHWEB/#page=1
You can then go to the following link to take a quiz on what you have learned http://paws.edco.ie/first-and-second-classes/

Poetry
This week we are going to look at a poem called 'My Shadow' by Robert Louis Stevenson. I hope you all like it. I have included a copy of it in a file below in case you would like to print it. Try reading the poem aloud with lots of expression.
Picture
Somethings to think about..... What is the poem about? Are there rhyming words in the poem? When do we see our shadows? Why is the shadow sometimes tall and sometimes small? Why does the poet call the shadow a coward? Who do you think Nursie is? Have you ever had fun making shadow puppets using your hands and a torch?
Perhaps you would like to draw a picture based on the poem!
Watch the Youtube video below to hear the poem being recited
Maths
Tables and mental maths

-Revise +8, -8 tables
-Mental Maths activity sheets
www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
-Continue to practise counting in 2's, 3's, 4's,5's, 10's

Addition
-Addition Puzzle page- Add to solve the riddle.
NB. Some of the Addition sums  need regrouping and some do not. Remember '9' is the largest number we can have in our units(ones) column. We only regroup units as tens if the digits in the units column add to more than 9!
Watch the video below for a little reminder on addition with regrouping.

Capacity
Last week we started to learn about Capacity. This week we are going to look at units of capacity. We measure capacity in litres and millilitres. When we are baking we use a measuring jug to measure the amount of milk or water we need for a recipe.
-Look in your presses or fridge and see if you can find any bottles or cartons that contain 1litre.
-Find a selection of containers eg. eggcup, cup, glass, small bowl, large bowl, pot, bucket, basin, vase etc. and estimate whether they hold about 1 litre, more than 1 litre or less than 1 litre. Check to see if your estimates are right using a measuring jug
-You could try the same thing with 1/2 litre and 1/4 litre
-Complete the capacity worksheets (see maths file)

Gaeilge
Keep practising the phrases you already know
- Inné ...., Inniú ..., Amárach ....
(An Luan, An Mháirt, An Chéadaoin, An Déardaoin, An Aoine, An Satharn, An Domhnach)
-Cén sort aimsir atá ann inniú?(what is the weather like today?)
Tá an aimsir geal(bright), dorcha (dark), gaofar (windy), te (hot), fuar (cold), scamallach (cloudy)
-Cad is ainm duit? (what is your name?)
_________ is ainm dom. My name is ________
-Conas atá tú? (how are you?)
Tá mé go maith (I am good/well)
-Cén rang ina bhfuil tú?(what class are you in?)
Tá mé i rang a dó (I am in 2nd class)

This week we are learning about 'An Samhradh' (The Summer)
Watch the first video below and complete - Cuir ceisteanna ar do Chara (ask your friend questions)worksheet in Irish file.
Watch the second video below and then complete- Bí ag scríobh worksheet  (see Irish file)
Litriú- An Trá (the beach) (see Irish file)

SESE

This week we are going to look at where light comes from. The Sun is our biggest source of light. Read the top ten facts about the sun and complete the worksheet in the SESE file! You can also learn more about the sun in the following link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkW54j82e9U
Can you think of any other sources of light? Some sources of light are natural and some are man made.
Watch the video below to find out about different sources of light
Shadows
- When an object blocks out light, we get a shadow. An object must be opaque (no light can pass through it) to create a shadow.
-Experiment with shadows using a torch- shine the torch at one of your toys and look for its shadow. Can you make the shadow bigger or smaller? How did you do it?
-You could do shadow experiments outside on a sunny day and use the sun as your source of light. place a toy in the garden and look at its shadow. Does the shadow stay in the same place all day? Why do you think this is?
-What is a shadow?- worksheet in SESE file.

Listen to the story of Daedalus and Icarus. It is a Greek myth about a boy who flew too close to the Sun.
Music
This week continuing with our 'Sun and light' theme we are going to listen to some songs about the Sun. The first song is called 'Here comes the Sun' by the Beatles.
The second song is called 'Towards the Sun' by Rihanna. It was used in the movie Home as you will see from the video.
In both of the pieces I want you to think about the following questions
-What instruments can you hear?
- what is the mood in the song- happy, sad, angry?
-Is there one voice or more than one voice?
I hope you enjoy the songs. Why not sing along?
Another song you might like to listen to and sing along with is' Tomorrow' from the movie Annie
www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PzL8aL6jtI

Art
Sunrise and Sunset are beautiful times of the day. Try to create your own Sunset pictures. Think about the colours you see in the sky when the sun is setting. Use these colours when creating your own Sunset pictures. You may find some inspiration in the images below.
PE

PE with Joe Wicks on Youtube is still running every morning at 9.00am
You might like to do some of the Just dance videos available on Youtube.
You could go for a walk with your family or play on your bike
Don't forget that playing in your garden  is a great way to keep fit and most importantly have fun!

Poem- Magic Shoes by Brian Moses

Try reading the poem aloud with lots of expression.
(There is a copy of the poem in the English File in case you would like to print it out)

Magic Shoes

I've got a pair of magic shoes,
they take me to the moon.
Dad says, 'Watch out for rockets,'
and Mum says, 'Come back soon.'

I've got a pair of magic shoes,
they take me to the stars,
and sometimes if I'm early,
I'll stop and have tea on Mars.

I've got a pair of magic shoes,
I can high jump over the school,
I can walk up walls like Spiderman
and act like I'm really cool!

I've got a pair of magic shoes,
I can dance like a disco king,
they spring me up to the rooftops,
they let me do anything.

But what if I had some magic socks,
magic underwear too!
With a magic suit of clothes I'm sure
there'd be nothing I couldn't do.

Brian Moses

The children can also take photographs of their written work and send it to me on Seesaw.  Update:                                                                                                                                                                                25/03/2020

As I am sure you are all aware the school closure has been extended. I hope you are all keeping well and are enjoying spending time together as a family.

I am sure that everyone is working their way through the booklet and workbook pages they were given before we broke up.

Remember that learning happens in a number of different way.  Children learn very well through playing indoors/outdoors, cooking, art etc. Time spent playing board games develops their language and problem solving skills. At this time it is important that our children feel happy and secure.

That being said I will be adding some new activities at the end of the week that children can complete next week. I know that not everyone has easy access to tablets/laptops so I will include work that can be done in their workbooks/copies as well as online activities. There will be no pressure to cover all the work outlined.

Some suggestions to keep the children busy:

Literacy: English
Reading- read a little every day- encourage the children to talk about what they are reading and if you can ask them some questions about what they have read
Library online- The children (with your help) can join the Louth county library online and borrow books to read on their tablets. Link lgma.iii.com/selfreg . BorrowBox offer lots of choices for the children to read.
Stories- stories.audible.com are offering free stories to listen to while children are off school. Click and link and then click start listening and choose a story to play
The author David Walliams is also releasing free audio stories. I had been reading some aloud in class and the children seemed to enjoy them. bit.ly/AudioElevenses
Write a letter-The children could write a letter to someone they are missing and give it to them when this is all over
shopping list- The children could help out by writing the shopping list you call out to them

Maths
Maths Journey  adventure game incorporating addition up to 99 more2.starfall.com/m/math/math-journey/load.htm?d=demo
Baking- measuring out ingredients etc.
Hit the button www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button  Go to section for 7-11 year olds. Hit the button can be found under times tables. Click on number bonds for addition and subtraction.. There are useful games on this site for other areas of the  maths curriculum also.

Literacy: Gaeilge
TG4 the children could spend some time watching programmes in Irish
Feicim le mo shuilin- 'I spy' in Irish

Physical activity
The body coach- on youtube (Joe Wicks) is doing live PE workouts every morning at 9.00am. I have been doing them at home with my kids and they love them.
Old fashioned games- Hopscotch (draw with chalk), skipping, hide and seek, hula hoops
Scavenger hunts- create a list of things to find in the garden eg. something a particular colour, a feather, a mini beast, stone etc.  and then go outside to look for them.

SESE
National Geographic kids.nationalgeographic.com  good resource for those interested in geography and science
Project - the children could do a project on a country or a place they would like to go or somewhere they have been to before.
Interview- come up with a set of questions and interview an older family member about what life was like when they were younger. They could do the interview over the phone.
Time Capsule- The children could make a time capsule for themselves. They could include a self portrait/photograph, a profile 'All about me', when I grow up i would like to.... , write a bit about what is happening in the world at the moment and anything else they would like to include.

Art
Twinkl (link previously provided)have lots of art activities that can be printed off.
Junk art The children can use empty boxes, bottles, odds and ends to make their own structures
Lego is another great activity to develop creativity
I am an Artist www.iamanartist.ie is a great website to support primary school art.

                                                                                                                                                                             19/03/2020
Dear Parents and Children,
I hope you are keeping well at this difficult time. I would like to encourage the children to set some time aside for their school work. The children were given work packs on Thursday 12/03/2020. This pack includes pages from their workbooks, worksheets and suggested websites which might be useful over the coming weeks. I would also encourage the children to take some exercise and engage in some Art activities to keep them occupied. Reading on a daily basis is also very important.

I would also encourage the children to engage in quality family time activities at this unsettling time. These could include games of cards, board games, games of hide and seek etc. and not forgetting helping with the Housework!!!

I will be in touch with advice, additional suggested tasks and activities next week. In the meantime I would encourage the children to spend some time each day on the work already provided.

Take Care and stay safe,
Sabrina McArdle
